Oblivion

So here we have the first big tent pole release of the summer.  Tom Cruise teams up with Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski for Sci-fi thriller Oblivion.  Any good?  Lets find out.Earth has been left decimated by an alien attack.  In 2017 aliens arrived destroying the moon bringing tsunamis and leaving the earth vulnerable to the hordes of alien ‘Scaves’ sent to finish the job.  A huge war raged for years until the humans decided to use nukes and finish it once and for all.  With the planet rendered useless the remaining humans fled to Titan, the largest moon of Saturn.  60 years later and Tom Cruise is Jac,k who is having vivid dreams of a life he never had, or did he?  He is part of a team with Victoria, Andrea Riseborough, who repair the drones which guard the massive machines that are extracting the planets remaining resources.  The remaining Scaves are trying to target the drones to stop the extracting machines.  Jack and Victoria have had their minds wiped to protect their mission but Jack is a bit of a dreamer who regularly defies orders and has a few secrets of his own.  With two weeks left before Jack and his other half Victoria retire to Titan, a spaceship crash lands and they rescue a surviving human, the always easy on the eye Olga Kurylenko.  This human turns out to be Julia the woman of Jacks dreams, literally.  Who is she?  Where is she from?  Who is she to him?  It also turns out that there are a band of human survivors led by Morgan Freeman, who have their own agenda, which includes Jack.  Things are not what they seem! The story is pure sci-fi and there are many twists and turns that I don’t want to tell you about as it will spoil what is a great start to what could be an excellent summer of sci-fi movies.  Everything about this film is quality.  The special effects are faultless and the design work is excellent.  The stars of the show being the drones, they grunt and groan with real menace.  Tom Cruise is in good Tom Cruise mode as you would expect and the rest of the cast is also very good.  Director and writer Joseph Kosinski does a great job building on the success of Tron Legacy.  My only gripe is that it could have been a bit tighter with it being 15/20 minutes shorter.  Other than that Oblivion is a fun, interesting and intriguing movie.  Well worth a look for sci-fi and action fans alike.Score- 7/10
