Jallen Messersmith gay

Jallen Messersmith gay, Jallen Messersmith has come out as the first openly gay men's college basketball player in the United States.The Benedictine College center told The Associated Press this week that he revealed his sexuality to coaches and teammates before this past season, opening up again Tuesday to Outsports.com.Messersmith said Jason Collins did not serve as a "buffer" for his announcement, but that "it's awesome to have another person in my sport to come out [nationally] beforehand."The 6'7" shot-blocker hopes to serve as a role model to others struggling with whether or not to go public."The big thing for me, why I wanted to do it, before the whole Jason Collins thing, is there weren't a lot of basketball-related stories like this," Messersmith said. "When I started coming out, I didn't have anyone to look to for advice or to see how their story went. People can look to see what happened to me - and there are positive things going on."Brittney Griner, the top pick in this year's WNBA Draft, also admitted a few weeks ago that she's a lesbian, though she says it was never a secret among coaches and teammates at Baylor.Benedictine is located in Kansas and is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, which condemns homosexual acts.However, the university teaches that gay individuals should be treated with respect, compassion and sensitivity.Said the school in a statement yesterday:"We support Jallen as a Benedictine College student and as a member of the Raven basketball team. Obviously, it would be inappropriate for us to discuss the private lives of students. As an institution we treat all students with respect and sensitivity."

In Levy We Trust?

Article by new e-Spurs Writer Chris Mecoy (UK). Welcome Chris!It’s that time of year again when Spurs fans worldwide weigh up the season just passed and decide whether we are happy with the way it went. The general belief is.......”not really”, “It could have been better” or the all powerful “with another striker in January, it could have been so different”.With the latter point in mind, many Spurs fans seem to lay the blame at not securing a Top 4 finish again squarely at the feet of Daniel Levy.  Yes, he should have spent a few more quid and picked up a striker in the summer or January transfer windows. A Dzeko, Benteke or dare I say Damiao could have amounted to just a couple more points this season, points that would have made all the difference.However, the fact the we Spurs fans, as an entity, are decidedly underwhelmed by a fifth placed finish, is also something that could be attributed to our esteemed chairman. For those old enough, cast your minds back to the pre-Levy/ENIC days, and you will be subjected to horrible memories such as relegation battles, rubbish signings (Trammezani anyone?) or the vomit-inducing borefest that was George Graham’s tenure in charge. We are a force in the Premier League now, and it would be foolish not to see just how much of an impact Daniel Levy has had at our club.Now, while some signings under Levy have not gone according to plan, such as Gio and Bentley, you have only to look at our current first team squad to know that they are in the rarity. Also, with the exception of Ledley King, Stephen Carr and Judas, Tottenham’s Youth set-up hardly flattered to deceive, whereas now we have an U-21 squad brimming with talent just waiting to burst on to the Premier League stage. Daniel Levy has played a major role in turning Spurs from a perennial underachieving team, to a team which is fighting for Champions League football every year.Is Levy able to give Tottenham that much needed push to make the final step up? Maybe. Maybe he needs a bit of help. Maybe, just maybe, he needs a young ambitious manager, and a first team squad filled with quality players, plus a world class superstar or two thrown in for good measure. All the ingredients are there, all we need is the right chef to get cooking. Levy got us this far, and it would take a brave man to doubt that he’ll get us over this last hurdle as well.All you need is faith.In Levy we trust? Absolutely.Comment on this article below and follow e-Spurs on Twitter www.twitter.com/e_spurs

Improve in the Trenches - Quality Midfield Depth

Article by e-Spurs USA Writer Brent WeberThe long term goal for Spurs is not only to qualify for Champions League, but to compete in Champions League. Spurs want to play for trophies because “The Game is About Glory.” In order to compete for trophies and compete in Europe, Spurs must address the lack of quality depth and rotation in the central midfield. This season was plagued with injuries in the midfield and I believe that the lack of a quality rotation and fatigue contributed greatly to these injuries. We just don’t have the quality depth in the central midfield to compete for the top 4 consistently, cup trophies, and European play. There are moves that need to be made in the summer transfer window to strengthen the midfield to make Spurs a legitimate contender. Our current midfield options are Sandro, Dembele, Holtby, Huddlestone, Parker, Livermore, Carroll, and Bentley. I consider Sandro and Dembele to be Champions League quality central midfielders. No matter the formation going forward, Sandro and Dembele will be anchors in the midfield. Lewis Holtby is new to the team and is showing promise. Holtby is not a like for like substitution for Sandro or Dembele but he does add depth and versatility. He will be a Spur for many years to come. Tom Huddlestone has played well over the last few weeks, but he has been inconsistent the last few seasons. Scott Parker is a hard worker and relentless competitor but he is a little long in the tooth and his play has really dropped off this year. Jake Livermore is really an unknown in my opinion because he has had little playing time. He is a holding midfielder and I believe he has potential, but he needs more development and playing time. Tom Carroll is a young, promising player. He has loads of potential but definitely needs consistent playing time against top competition. I hardly of know of Bentley and have personally never seen him play. In my opinion, there are moves that need to be made quickly in the transfer window focused on the midfield to free up cash and roster space. First, I would sell Bentley to any club willing to take him. Next, I would sell Scott Parker while he still has some value in the market and I think they are a few potential suitors for his services. This next phrase kills me to write, but I would put Huddlestone on the market. He is one of my favourite Spurs players, but due to his current form, his value is probably higher now than it will be again and AVB should capitalise on this immediately. In addition, Huddlestone wants first team football and it is highly unlikely that he will play in front of Sandro or Dembele on a consistent basis. These moves alone free up 3 roster spots and could potentially bring in 6-9 million in transfer fees. Carroll and Livermore are more interesting because of their longer term potential. Livermore is 23 and Carroll is only 20. A decision needs to be made to either commit to playing them or loaning them out for the season. The first option is to make a commitment and play them during League Cup, FA cup matches, and other mid-week matches. AVB could afford to rotate one of these at a time into matches for development. He shouldn’t put them together as a pair, but playing one alongside a Dembele or Sandro would give them great experience with limited risk to Spurs. Both could be used in Europa play as substitutes or starters depending on the match. However, neither of these players is currently ready for Champions League level play. I would like to see Livermore go out on loan and I would like to see Carroll in meaningful action next season. Spurs could potentially have 4 to 5 roster spots available in the midfield alone. In my opinion, we must build a five-player, high quality, central midfield rotation to be competitive in league play and Europe. Currently we are only 3 deep with Sandro, Dembele, and Holtby. At a minimum, we must bring in 2 established, high quality midfielders during the transfer window along with some young, talented, lesser known options to build depth and upgrade the midfield. Here is my wish list of high quality midfielder I would love to see at Spurs: Joao Mountinho (Porto)Victor Wanyama (Celtic)Mohamed Diame (West Ham)Christian Erikson (Ajax)Yann M’Vila (Rennes)Daniele DeRossi (Roma)Younes Belhanda (Montpellier)As I said, this is a wish list, but I feel confident that Spurs could attract a few players from this list. My favourite on this list is Mountinho! He is a dynamic, creative, attacking midfielder who would immediately upgrade our roster and set us up for the attacking 4-3-3 formation that AVB likes. A midfield with Sandro, Dembele, and Mountinho would be amazing. I feel that Mountinho wants a move to a more competitive league and Spurs would give him a great opportunity to prove himself. I just hope Levy will open up his wallet and really go after him. Erikson and DeRossi are being courted by many big name clubs like Mountinho and I just don’t know if we can attract them since we are not playing in Champions League. That leaves Wanyama, Diame, M’Vila, and Belhanda. All of these are good quality players and I would love to have any of them at Spurs. My preference would be Wanyama and Belhanda. There are several priorities for Spurs going into the transfer window. We must sign at least 1 if not 2 high quality, top tier Strikers. We need an overhaul at LB. A little depth at CB and Wing wouldn’t hurt. However, I don’t feel that Spurs can make the next step forward without strengthening the central midfield. I compare the central midfield to the line of scrimmage, also known as “the trenches” of American Football. Football games are won or lost in the trenches and the team that controls the line of scrimmage will typically win the game. Soccer is no different. The team that controls the trenches typically wins the match. We need young, quality, depth in the midfield to control the trenches, build on our momentum from this season, and to be true contenders in England and in Europe. Hopefully AVB and Levy are prepared to invest!Comment on this article below and follow e-Spurs on Twitter www.twitter.com/e_spurs

Arsenal have agreed with Ashley Williams

Arsenal have agreed with Ashley WilliamsAccording to reports English media, Arsenal has agreed to transfer Ashley Williams from Swensea, and he will at the beginning of next transitional period to cross into this clubIt is believed that the whole transfer be at between 8 and 10 million pounds, and the player has agreed a three-year contract, under which he will earn 60,000 pounds a week. Arsenal has so won the race with Liverpool, who was also interested in bringing this great defenders. What was key was desire of players to play in the Champions League, which is a company of Arsene Wenger and provided in the latest round of Premier League. Williams comes to Vengerov insistence, and is considered to have the quality and experience that immediately take place in the starting lineup, "Gunner." After the arrival of Williams, status of Thomas Vermalena is in question, and he will most likely be sold in the coming transitional period. medianet_width='468'; medianet_height= '60'; medianet_crid='637667144';

Exchange with BBC on Iraq war fatalities

Whether you're soaraway Sun or BBC 1Misinformation is a weapon of mass destruction The killing in Iraq goes relentlessly on, nominally reported by the BBC as "sectarian", rather than invasion-created, violence.No mention, contextual or otherwise, of the West's primary crime and responsibility for all of this carnage.  And while the body count from such bombings is noted, the BBC still offer little or no detail of the wider war-led mortality figures within this deeply traumatised state.On which note, an exchange with the BBC over its selective use of Iraq war death data:Original letter to BBC (29 March 2013): I'd like to request that the BBC end its selective use of Iraq Body Count (IBC) when denoting civilian war deaths in Iraq. The issue of BBC bias towards IBC and the false impressions it serves is discussed here. As noted, the following suggests a simplified alternative which, rather than IBC's limited and misleading count, offers a more informed and balanced range of figures: Civilian war deaths in Iraq (range): Iraq Body Count (IBC) (till Dec 2012) 110,937 - 121,227 Lancet/Johns Hopkins survey (March 2003 - end of June 2006) 654,965 Opinion Research Business (ORB) survey (August 12–19, 2007) 1,033,000 Source: Wikipedia Please consider replacing sole reference to IBC with this fairer and more viewer-serving graphic. The use of IBC as an 'authoritative' and singularly-mentioned figure is widespread across the BBC, which suggests that a specific executive/editorial decision has been taken in this regard. I'd like to see any copy or/and details of that decision-making process. As the BBC's own charter/editorial guidelines specify a requirement to be neutral and impartial, I look forward to a fairer presentation of this key information. If such an alteration is not undertaken, I intend to seek a ruling on this matter from the BBC Trust. For the purposes of this complaint, I cite the following online report and its singular, biased use of IBC figures: Iraq 10 years on: In numbers I look forward to your reply. RegardsJohn Hilley From BBC (17 May 2013):Dear Mr HilleyThanks for contacting us.Please accept our apologies for the delay in replying. We know our correspondents appreciate a quick response and we’re sorry you have had to wait on this occasion.[Administrative details...]We forwarded your concerns to the BBC News website team who respond to your concerns as follows:"We have reported over recent years on the various attempts to catalogue the death toll in Iraq, and on the controversy surrounding the different figures.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-11107739 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6045112.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/7180055.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/3962969.stm The Iraq Body Count is the only organisation to offer an actual count covering the period since the US-led invasion. Other organisations seek to estimate the death toll at particular points in time, using statistical and sampling techniques. In the particular graphic you cite, we attempt to show the rise and fall in deaths and casualties over the 10 years since the invasion. The Iraq Body Count is the only source that we feel we can rely on for this specific data. This graphic is not about numbers, but about the pattern over that period and other sources do not provide this information."Please be assured that your complaint has been registered.Thanks again for getting in touch.Kind RegardsGemma McAleerBBC Complaintswww.bbc.co.uk/complaintsReply to BBC (19 May 2013):Dear Gemma McAleerThe deceit and evasion in your reply is glaringly obvious.The first link here gives distinct prominence to IBC, with only cursory mention of Lancet/Johns Hopkins and no mention of ORB, the others providing only basic news/assessment of the Lancet study and Iraqi Family Health Survey.However, the issue is not just about discussions of those latter studies - sparse as they are in overall BBC output - but, more specifically, fair and equal presentation of such sources/data in viewer graphics.It's clearly evident that the BBC has selected IBC's data because it reflects UK/US war killing in its least damaging light. Your every excusing word makes the BBC complicit in disguising that crime. Also, if, as you claim, the point of the graphic is "not about numbers", why insist on a count-based graphic at all?And even if it's about showing "a pattern over that period", why still exclude illustration of the other studies?I've suggested that, for balanced information, the BBC could show a (simplified) caption with all these sources and their respective data. Why is this so problematic?I've also asked for specific information on who at the BBC made the editorial decision to 'adopt' IBC and how that decision was arrived at. Since neither that nor a satisfactory answer to my question about using additional sources has been received, I wish to have my enquiry elevated to 'stage 2' consideration. RegardsJohn Hilley-------------It would be deeply intriguing to have an account of the BBC's internal discussions on this matter. Their reluctance to divulge such information is often based on a key clause in the Freedom of Information Act (2000), specifying an obligation only to disclose information "held for purposes other than those of journalism, art or literature". As noted by the BBC: "This means that the Act does not apply to material held for the purposes of creating the BBC's output (TV, radio, online etc), or material which supports and is closely associated with these creative activities." All of which, as with the suppressed war deaths figures, keeps viewers from knowing more particularly how that editiorial decision was arrived at. A similar request made to Channel 4's editorial team has not been answered. An exchange with Jon Snow on the issue of war death figures can be seen here.

Colorado Massacre Suspect Pursues Insanity Defense

Colorado Massacre Suspect Pursues Insanity Defense, Defense lawyers for James E. Holmes, the former graduate student charged with opening fire on a packed Aurora movie theater last summer, said in court filings Tuesday that he intended to plead not guilty by reason of insanity in the attack.Mr. Holmes, who is accused of killing 12 people and wounding dozens more, will enter the plea at hearing next week, his lawyers said. He faces 166 counts of murder, attempted murder and other charges, and prosecutors announced last month that they intended to seek the death penalty.Earlier this year, after Mr. Holmes’s defense team said it was not ready to enter a plea, Judge William B. Sylvester entered a standard not guilty plea on Mr. Holmes’s behalf.But defense lawyers have long signaled they would mount an insanity defense, saying in court documents and during a preliminary hearing that Mr. Holmes was mentally ill at the time of the attack.A new judge in the case, Carlos A. Samour Jr., will rule on the plea change
